According to a book called "Ngudud" (smoking) by Iman Budi Santosa, cigarettes and smoking habits have colored Javanese life on many levels. It can be seen from the habit of smoking is everywhere, whether it be in private or in public spaces. Cigarettes consumed by all levels of society, ranging from folk to officials, young or old, rich or poor, male or female, not least religious figures and beliefs in Java ( page 7 ).
Java grassroots (wong cilik) have discovered the benefits of cigarettes individually associated with mental conditions, work, and social life. Although smoking is not a major requirement as well as clothing (sandang) and food (pangan), but for those who have gained tangible benefits, they feel the sensation of psychological comfort of cigarettes. Generally, smoking is done after a meal, either breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
At the level of teenage smokers, smoking after a meal as has become mandatory activities. Smoking activities usually done while chatting with friends so the atmosphere feels intimate. When do not smoke after a meal, they feel there is something missing, clumsy, and many other uncomfortable feelings. From this and the term "Wis mangan ora udud nek" which means do not smoke after a meal it was uncomfortable. The word "udud" itself means smoking, while "nek" is an uncomfortable feeling.
